LCR Goonewardene (Retd) RSP VSV USP ndc IG
Major General LCR Goonewardene joined the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet in May 1969 and was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery in September 1970.
Some of the Senior Appointments held by him whilst in service were, Military Assistant to the Comd. of the Army, Squadron Comd. KDA, Brigade Comd. Vavuniya, Batticaloa and Colombo, Commandant Sri Lanka Military Academy Diyatalawa, Colonel GS and Director Operations Army HQ, General Officer Commanding Divisions in Jaffna and Elephant Pass, Security Forces Comd. Jaffna, General Officer Commanding 11 Division, Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief of Staff. He retired from the Army in November 2003 on reaching the mandatory age of retirement.
Whilst in Service he underwent training in India, Pakistan, Singapore, UK, USA, China, Italy and Switzerland.
He qualified as an Instructor in Gunnery from the School of Artillery Nowshera, Pakistan. After following courses of training under the ICRC and the Institute of Humanitarians Law in Italy and Switzerland, he was a National Instructor on the Law of Armed Conflicts and Humanitarian Law and conducted courses of training on these aspects for both officers and men. He is a graduate from the National Defence College, India.
He is Trustee of the Ceylon Artillery Association. He is also the President of Board of Trustees of the Unity Mission Trust, which is involved in Unity, Reconciliation and Integration programmes for youth.
He is presently Head of Administration of F. J.& G. de Saram (Attorneys-at-Law).
